Volunteering
An important part of our Kindergarten philosophy is the active role of parents in planning the program and participating in the daily activities. A positive family atmosphere, supportive of what is happening in the classroom, enhances the child’s chances for success in school. First hand experience in the classroom activities is gained best by parents volunteering in the Kindergarten program. Your help frees the Teacher to spend more time with individual children and on special kinds of activities. Also, your special skills and talents enrich school life for both the children and the Teacher. Your child will appreciate your visit as a source of support and an act of caring, plus it eases the transition from home to school. It lets you see your child interacting with his/her peers and it allows you to get to know your child in a new social setting.
WHAT DO CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS DO?
Usually, there is no trouble figuring out what to do … the children keep you involved! You might print a child’s description of his/her masterpiece, help at a centre by assisting individual children, thus extending their thinking and directing their learning experiences. The Teacher will provide you with lots of guidance. Maybe you have a special talent or craft that you would like to share. Mainly, you will be bringing your own unique talents to the classroom by just being yourself.
WHO CAN BE A VOLUNTEER?
Mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, babysitters – anyone who wants to make a contribution can be a volunteer. If you are a working parent, even volunteering one or two days during the year is a valuable contribution to the Teacher and your child. We would ask you not to bring your younger children into the classroom when it is your turn to be a parent helper. Past experience has shown that pre-schoolers can be disruptive to the class. If you are having trouble finding a sitter, possibly a babysitting exchange can be set up with others via our newsletter.
Busing
We receive funding from Alberta Education for any child who lives over 2.4 km from our Kindergarten. In lieu of busing, we forward these funds to the parents who assume responsibility for their child's transporation. Recently, these funds were $499 for the year.
