Enrollment

Criteria

Alberta Education states that children who attend our kindergarten must turn 5 by the end of February.  There are some exceptions that involve special educational needs and/or how many years a child has attended kindergarten.  Children from all over Calgary join our kindergarten for a year of learning and enjoyment.  Some of these children have special educational needs when they enter the program while a few are identified while they are attending our kindergarten.  These children may have mild/moderate disabilities that require some help from a Speech Language Pathologist or an Occupational Therapist.  Others have slightly more severe disabilities and will be accompanied by a Teacher Assistant who can give them the one-on-one attention that they require.  Some of these children require Program Unit Funding (PUF) or mild/moderate funding from Alberta Education.  These children are a welcome addition to our classroom and assimilate beautifully.

Classrooms

We hold our classes in the lower level of Glamorgan Church and we are thrilled with all of the natural light that comes through our three large windows. We have access to a wonderful area that we use as our 'gum' on a daily basis. The playground is close by and we have a great green space where we can participate in 'gym' activities outside (like our parachute games). Our school year runs from September through June and our classes operate for 2 hours and 45 minutes daily, offering 475 instructional hours per year, 5 days a week. We have one morning and one afternoon class, both taught by Mrs. Val Driedger. Each class will have a maximum of 18 children.

Teacher

Mrs. Val Driedger brings to our Kindergarten a wealth of experience. She obtained her Bachelor of Education Degree in Edmonton at the University of Alberta and taught with the Edmonton Public School Board for 11 years before moviing to Calgary in 2001. Her Special Education Degree has provided her with a unique background which includes teaching preschoolers with special needs, teaming with a wide range of professionals and education support staff, and providing inclusive education in her kindergarten, grade one and grade two classrooms. She is a wife to Kevin and mom to three kids, Jennifer, Ben and Alison. She is an avid reader, downhill skier, mountain biker, piano player, and general life enthusiast! Feel free to come and meet Val at any time during the day in our classroom.

Program Coordinator

Mrs. Louise Hardy first became involved with the Glamorgan Community Kindergarten when her daughter was enrolled in the program. Louise has stayed involved with the Kindergarten since that time, either on the LAC (Local Advisory Committee) or Board of Directors, seeing her other two children enjoy the program as well. In 1994 Louise was hired by the Board of Directors to be the Program Coordinator. She is responsible for all administrative functions and sees to the smooth operation of every facet of the Kindergarten. Holding her Bachelor of Education Degree, she has previously taught kindergarten, as well as various elementary grades, and when needed, Louise will still substitute for our Kindergarten.
